The pain of parents is clearly depicted by the couple quite convincingly, even disturbingly so. His wife, Nandini (Asha Sarath) is a stereotypical housewife: always worried about gossip, jealous and whiny the two continuously fight, but what unites the couple is their teenage son, Anand (Prajwal Prasad), who they push to become a doctor.Ī tragedy brings Venugopal and his wife’s life to a standstill. Still, though the film is certainly not original, it does manage to capture the essence it seeks to portray.Ī hardnosed businessman who isn’t too hung up on such things like ethics and morality when it comes to money, Venugopal (Mammootty) owns a local finance company. Using the melodrama of films from the 70s and 80s, this film uses cliché tear jerking family drama to tug at every Malayali’s heartstrings. While we might be convinced by the performance of the protagonist’s son, Prajwal Prasad and doctor Jayshree played by Mamtha Mohandas, T.G.Ravi doesn’t snugly fit into the shoes of a villain and The performances of Sajitha Madathil and Sunil Sukhada are wooden. The other actors appear mediocre in comparison.Īsha Sharath is okay but despite being the female lead, seems to appear insubstantial when compared to Mammootty. For the fans of Mammootty, this one is nothing less than a grand treat.In what will be deemed to be one of the best performances of his life, Mammootty carries this film from the beginning to the end with consistency and confidence, never breaking out of character or appearing unconvincing even once. Varsham is a rehashed version of those stereotyped movies from the past, but even then it has been presented well. Asha Sarath supports him with a good performance as well. Though he has done such emotional dramas so many times in the past, like in 'Pappayude Swantham Appoos' for instance, Mammootty makes the anguish of a father look disturbingly real. Manoj Pillai?s visuals and Bijibal?s music are good. Though there are no efforts to present something new, Ranjith Sankar?s script hits the right notes mostly and he has packaged the film well.

But as it is mandatory in stories of this kind, an unprecedented happening comes up soon.įor all those who are no great fans of old fashioned family dramas, this one could be mushy to the core, but even then the film has its moments for sure. After many half-hearted efforts during recent years, Mammootty takes the viewer through the pain of a doting dad, who has to face an extremely disturbing reality in director Ranjith Sankar?s 'Varsham'.
